Why Thuli Madonsela supports Zuma remission decision
It was Thuli Madonsela’s State of Capture report that led to the current state of affairs, having recommended the commission’s establishment.
Former public protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela has become the latest to weigh in on the saga surrounding ex-president Jacob Zuma.
Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale alongside Justice Minister Ronald Lamola announced that Zuma would be one of over nine thousand inmates who would benefit from the special remission process, which is aimed at addressing overcrowding in our prisons. This is generally granted to low-risk offenders, many of whom are convicted of non-violent crimes.
Zuma reported to Escourt Prison in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Friday, 11 August 2023, in the early hours. However, he was allowed to go home just two hours later.

THULI MADONSELA ‘SUPPORTS’ ZUMA’S REMISSION
Taking to Twitter, Thuli Madonsela said she was in support of the move, writing in part: “I support the remission of former President Zuma’s sentence as Ubuntu anchored. The point regarding no one being above the law has been made and the teaching power of the law leveraged. Nothing more could be gained through further incarceration. There’s also the fact his release was the state’s mistake”

HOW MADONSELA IS LINKED TO ZUMA SAGA
It was essentially Thuli Madonsela’s State of Capture report that has led to the current state of affairs – she recommended the establishment of the State Capture Commission, in light of the legions of corruption allegations that were being levelled against Jacob Zuma and the controversial Gupta family at the time.
Fast forward to seven years after releasing the damning report, so much has unfolded. It was Zuma’s refusal to appear before the Commission which led to his incarceration. He was sentenced to 15 months behind bars by the highest court in the land after he defied another court order, which had instructed him to appear before the Commission.
