Although Tito Mboweni’s tombstone has received acclaim for its “simplicity,” many South Africans are questioning how and why it was installed so soon after his funeral and burial over the weekend.

The former Minister of Finance was taken to his final resting place at the  Bodweni Cemetary in Limpopo.

WHY HAS TITO MBOWENI’S TOMBSTONE BEEN ERECTED?

On the X platform, images of Tito Mboweni’s tombstone have been shared.

The funeral of the first black Reserve Bank Governor was organised by the Broodie Funeral Parlour.

The company is the same one that facilitated the funeral service of AKA – real name Kiernan Forbes – last year.

And just like AKA, Tito’s burial plot sported a tombstone just hours after his burial.

Social media users quickly questioned why this was so, given that tombstones are required to be erected after a lengthy period.

According to authorities, this was likely a set up by a funeral parlour for display purposes only. As was the case with AKA’s tombstone, it will likely be removed for the ground to settle, as is required.

According to experts, it is recommended that a tombstone be installed after 6-12 months after the burial.

BURIED AMONGST FAMILY MEMBERS

Meanwhile, Tito Mboweni chose to have his body buried amongst his loved ones in the Mboweni family plot at the Bodweni Cemetary, near his birthplace in Tzaneen.

The 65-year-old – who had Type 2 diabetes – is buried amongst his parents, Nelson and Peggy Mboweni.

In an old tweet, Tito jokingly revealed what he wanted inscribed on his tombstone.

He tweeted: “My family will write…: Here is our brother, father and cousin. He was a good man. And on the back, the ANC writes : He was a good Comrade. Faithful and just to the cause. On the sides: Bloody stubborn b*stard. Always having contrarian views!”.
