Which supermarket offers the CHEAPEST prices on groceries?

The cost-of-living crisis is real and each month sharing the cheapest prices on groceries is one of the ways we try enriching our audiences’ lives. Why should you be paying higher prices at one retailer when you can save a little somewhere else.

Usually, we get this content from The Outlier who regularly have Makro ranked tops for the cheapest prices on groceries. However, this month we’ve pulled the data from Picodi.com who have omitted Food Lovers’ Market, Makro and Spar from their findings. Nevertheless, let’s delve into the numbers for August 2023.

CHEAPEST PRICES ON GROCERIES

Analysts at Picodi have put together a basket of 23 typical household items and compared prices across four big South African retailers: Checkers, Pick n Pay, Shoprite and Woolworths. Here’s what they calculated.

While we’ll contend it’s a shame that Food Lovers’ Market, Makro and Spar were not included in this comparison, as they often mixed up the results, the supermarkets with the cheapest prices on groceries ranked as follows:

  1. Shoprite: R931.17
  2. Checkers: R965.77
  3. Pick n Pay: 1070.27
  4. Woolworths: R1095.77

Of the standardised list of 23 items, Shoprite had the cheapest prices for ten of them. They are bread, canola oil, eggs, bottle of water, milk, pasta, beef mince, potatoes, tomatoes and bananas.

Interestingly, despite coming in last, of the 23 items compared, Woolworths had the cheapest prices on groceries when it came to sugar, white rice, Nescafe coffee, Lipton tea, and lettuce. Note that these prices don’t include loyalty membership discounts.

SO, WHAT’S GONE UP IN PRICE?

According to Business Tech, food prices for staples like Onions (84%), Potatoes (45%), Butternut (31%), Oranges (30%) and Carrots (22%) have shown stubbornly high price increases year-on-year. Interestingly, Cooking oil (-29%), Beef (-4%), Inyama yangaphakathi (-10%) and Margarine (-3%) have bucked the trend and are cheaper than last year.
