When is VOTER registration for the 2024 elections in South Africa?

From venues to times and online links, here’s everything you need to know about voter registration for the 2024 elections.

Voter registration for the 2024 elections in South Africa takes place over two days this weekend. Saturday 18 November and Sunday 19 November 2023 are the two days dedicated to voter registration for the 2024 elections.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa are entrusted with delivering free and fair national elections in 2024. Voter registration for the 2024 elections in South Africa will run from 08h00 till 17h00 this coming weekend, Saturday 18 November and Sunday 19 November 2023.

VOTER REGISTRATION FOR THE 2024 ELECTIONS

Actual dates for South Africa’s 2024 national and provincial elections have not be confirmed as yet. However, they must take place between May and August 2024, and exact dates will be announced by the President early in the new year.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa says it will be ready for this weekend’s voter registration for the 2024 elections:

  • There will be 22 300 stations setup countrywide for registrations.
  • South Africans aged 16 or older can register.
  • You must by 18 years or older to actually vote.
  • To register to vote you need a South African identity document (green ID booklet, ID smartcard or a valid temporary ID certificate.
  • Critically, to register you must also provide an address or description of where you live so that the IEC can place you in the correct ward and voting district.
  • The Electoral Commission of South Africa says NO proof of address is needed.
  • You MUST register at the voting station for the voting district where you live, and vote where you are registered. Click HERE to find the correct voting station for you.

CAN I REGISTER TO VOTE ONLINE?

Yes, you can. Simply click HERE to register to vote, check and update your registration address. If you’re one of the tens of millions of South Africans without access to the internet, however, you must register to vote at the voting station for your voting district between 18-19 November 2023 during the specified times.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED?

If you are a South African citizen but don’t have an ID document, the Electoral Commission says you must apply for one at a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) branch as soon as possible. DHA offices will be open this weekend to coincide with the voter registration weekend.
