The public was urged to avoid the area while the whale removal was taking place. The carcass was taken to Granger Bay for removal. No details were given about the possible cause of death.

The NSRI was quoted as saying that the whale was a juvenile male, 8.5 meters long and and weighing about 8 to 9 tons. Samples were taken by the Department of Environmental Affairs – Oceans and Coasts.

At Christmas a humpback whale carcass washed up on to Strand beach in False Bay, closing the beach off to holiday makers for more than a day.
