People believe that the 45-year-old allegedly died from a drug overdose.
De Jager allegedly beat and cut the throat of his wife, Liezel, 38, at their Amanzimtoti home in October 2021.
Shortly after her death, people reported Werner missing for days. Rescuers found him in a serious condition and airlifted him to a nearby hospital.
Liezel worked as a popular pastor for the NG Kerk Suidkus at the time of her death.
AUTHORITIES ACCUSED HIM OF MURDERING HIS WIFE, LIEZEL DE JAGER
The Amanzimtoti Branch Court recently denied bail to De Jager, and authorities expected him to return to court on 10 May.
Democratic Alliance (DA) Ian Cameron confirmed De Jager’s death on Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Action Society said it had learned with mixed emotions about the death of De Jager earlier today.
IAN CAMERON CONFIRMED DE JAGER’S DEATH
“Our hearts go out to Liezel’s young daughters who now lost both parents, and we pray for strength for her parents, Henk and Salomé, who are their guardians since Liezel’s death,” – said Action Society spokesperson Juanita du Preez.
Yesterday marked two and a half years since Liezel’s murder on 13 October 2021.
Someone murdered Liezel in front of her house after a morning run, and the perpetrator (or perpetrators as rumor leads us to believe) attempted to make it appear as if the attack was of a sexual nature.
Reports alleged that the couple’s relationship had deteriorated to the point where they were sleeping in separate bedrooms.
According to The South African’s report in 2021, De Jager’s body was discovered on 13 October 2021.
Werner reportedly found the 38-year-old De Jager just after 7 am with strangle marks around her neck.
PEOPLE BELIEVE DE JAGER DIED OF AN OVERDOSE
Du Preez furthermore said the case stood still until Action Society started applying pressure, and the National Cold Case Unit under Brigadier Gininda finally took over the investigation.
Authorities arrested De Jager shortly thereafter.
“We will continue to seek justice for Liezel. We owe it to her daughters, family, and friends to see this case through and getting the answers and justice Liezel deserves,” – said Action Society spokesperson Juanita du Preez.
