Water outage: Johannesburg Water to conduct 16-hour maintenance
Johannesburg Water teams will conduct unplanned maintenance on Tuesday morning. These areas will be affected.
Johannesburg Water teams will conduct unplanned maintenance, which will result in a 16-hour outage.
The maintenance will start at 7:00 and end at 23:00 on Tuesday, 11 June.
JOHANNESBURG WATER TO CONDUCT UNPLANNED MAINTENANCE
Johannesburg Water said its teams will be repairing a burst 600mm main pipe to improve service delivery and the continuity of water supply.
There will be no water during the maintenance and there is no finite decision yet on alternative supply.
All the streets in the following suburbs will be affected:
- Atholl
- Atholl Gardens
- Benmore
- Hyde Park
- Hurlingham
- Illovo
- Inanda
- Morningside
- New Brighton
- Parkmore
- Sandhurst
- Sandton
- Sandown
- Strathavon
- Simbo
- Willowild
LINDEN2 RESERVOIR MAINTENANCE POSTPONED
Meanwhile, the Randburg Reservoir repairs scheduled for Monday, 10 June, were postponed to Wednesday, 12 June.
The maintenance will start at 8:00 and end at 20:00.
Johannesburg Water said the supply to the reservoir will be isolated (closed) to allow for repairs, which will affect some systems.
Affected systems and suburbs include:
- Linden1 Reservoir – Robindale ext 1, Jacanlee, Cresta ext 2/3/4/1/5, Darrenwood and Aldara Park.
- Linden1 Tower – Linden, Pine Park ext 1, Linden ext
- Kensington B Reservoir – Bryanston ext 5, Bryanston ext 3, Beverly Gardens, Ferndale (all extensions), Strijdom Park, O Summit, Vandia Grove (all extensions).
- Kensington B Tower – Bryanbrink, Daniel Brinkpark, Bryanston ext 5, Lyme Park ext 3 and 4, Kensington B.
- Blairgowrie Reservoir
- Linden2 Reservoir
CITY POWER IMPLEMENTS LOAD REDUCTION
Meanwhile, City Power is implementing load reduction in areas with exceedingly high usage levels to protect from total collapse.
The power utility said other measures, such as ripple relays and cutoffs of illegal connections, are currently underway to relieve the severe strain on the electricity network due to a massive increase in energy demand.
“City Power will implement load reduction on Monday, 10 June. Load reduction will be implemented during peak times from 6:00 – 10:00 and 16:00 – 22:00 in high-density areas and suburbs concerning usage levels that threaten to overload the electricity equipment.
“Load limiting through smart metres will also be implemented in July to further assist customers in saving energy without switching them off completely.”
SHARP INCREASE IN THE AVERAGE EVENING PEAK LOAD
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the entity has recorded a sharp increase in the average evening peak load in some areas.
The average peak load went by 65% from 25MW during the summer months to 33 MW between April and May 2024.
Mangena said that in some instances, the load reaches 42 MW, constituting a 110% increase in consumption levels compared with the warmer season.
