Watch the moment below when the largely American audience at the Miss Universe contest in Atlanta, USA, went wild for the powerful words delivered by Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi, who was crowned Miss Universe 2019 at the event last night!
When asked the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today, the Eastern Cape beauty answered “leadership”.
She said: “It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time. Not because we don’t want to, but because of what society has labelled women to be.” (Hearing this, the crowd erupted in applause.)
Zozi went on: “I think we are the most powerful beings on the world and that we should be given every opportunity. That is what we should be teaching young girls – to take up space. Nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself.” (And then the crowd really went wild!)

Zozi has already cemented herself as a beauty queen (the most beautiful in the Universe!) worth listening to.
She also said last night: “I grew up in a world where my kind of skin and my kind of hair was never considered to be beautiful. And I think that it’s time that that stops today. I want children to look at me, and see my face, and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine. Thank you.”
