WATCH: Looters steal mayonnaise from accident scene
Police officers had to disperse a large crowd of looters on the R21 making off with mayonnaise by the arm load.
It’s tangy and delicious, but do you like mayonnaise enough to scoop it right off the highway? Well, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers had to disperse a large crowd of looters making off with mayonnaise by the arm load. This was after a truck carrying the tangy condiment was involved in an accident on the R21 freeway, leaving the highway an oily mess.

According to IOL, EMPD’s Marie Mashishi said the mayonnaise truck lost its load on the R21 heading north to Pretoria. The large spill is between the Pomona Road and Benoni on-ramp. What followed was just as you would expect in South Africa. Motorists summarily looted the tangy condiment. So is the increase in the cost of living these days you’ve got to take every opportunity you can get, right?
However, EMPD officers soon brought the scene under control. The police are now urging motorists travelling to Pretoria to approach the scene with caution. Likewise, they ask anyone to use an alternative route if possible, as the R21 is down to just one lane slick currently. SANRAL said earlier that the clean-up operation continues today (Tuesday 12 March) and should take several hours to remove the last of the oily residue from the road.
