CAPE TOWN – Parliament descended into minor chaos Wednesday afternoon after the chief whip of the Democratic Alliance John Steenhuisen told the presiding officer that he could not tell COPE leader Mosiuoa Lekota to withdraw the word “faction” when referring to the ANC.
Steenhuisen said that by telling the Congress of People’s leader Lekota that labeling ANC members “factions” unparliamentary Raserati Tau was talking rubbish, at which point he was told to withdraw the word “rubbish”.
“One faction is made up of two or three parties with the presiding officers and a smaller faction is trying to keep the executive accountable,” Lekota said.
Steenhuisen refused to withdraw the word and then repeated it at least twice, at which point DA leader Mmusi Maimane stood up to defend him. He said that Tau repeatedly showed favour towards the ANC and never said anything when they labeled the DA “racist”.
Tau then told Steenhuisen to leave the chamber, which he did. Then the DA members began chanting for Tau himself to leave the chamber, at which point Tau told the DA to leave.
