Voter Registration Weekend: Your chance to register is here

The Electoral Commission gears up for the Voter Registration Weekend on 3-4 February, prioritising citizen engagement.

The Electoral Commission, led by Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo, is poised for the second Voter Registration Weekend, scheduled for 3-4 February.

This critical weekend follows the success of the initial registration event on 18 – 19 November 2023, emphasising the importance of this opportunity for eligible South Africans to participate in the electoral process.

Addressing the media in Pretoria, Mamabolo urged all eligible voters to seize the upcoming Voters Registration Weekend. They should register, verify, or update their details ahead of the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures elections.

“We further urge eligible voters to visit the registration stations, to inspect, or update their registration details or to do so online, ” said Mamabolo.

With 23 303 registration stations strategically positioned throughout the country, accessibility remains a key focus. This builds on the positive outcomes observed during the first registration weekend.

VOTERS REGISTRATION WEEKEND TIMES

Registration stations will open at 8:00 and close at 17:00 on both days of the Voter Registration Weekend. The commitment of over 69 718 trained staff members is evident. It underscores the Electoral Commission’s dedication to ensuring a seamless and inclusive registration process.

“The names of trained staff have also been shared with the municipal political liaison committees to facilitate objections against those staff members that are deemed unsuitable. Out of the appointed staff, 53 028 are female and 16 690 are male.”

Voter Management Devices (VMDs) continue to play a pivotal role in streamlining the registration process, as Mamabolo emphasised during the media briefing.

These technological tools significantly contributed to the success of the first Registration Weekend. The upcoming Voter Registration Weekend will utilise VMDs with three business applications running.

CHECK VOTER STATUS VIA WHATSAPP CHATBOT

As of today, voters can conveniently check their registration status through the IEC’s Whatsapp Chatbot on 0600 88 0000. Additionally, they can access voting station details using the same platform.
