Venice entry fee to continue in 2025

If you’re planning a trip to the beautiful city of Venice in 2025, you will still be subject to the city’s tourist tax.

As reported by Schengen.news, Venice will extend its tourist tax as well as double the amount charged to some foreigners visiting the city next year.

The €5 (+/- R100) tourist fee, which came into effect this past April on a trial basis, lasted 29 days and came to an end on Sunday, 14 July.

The tax reportedly generated over €2 million (R38 300 280) by the end of July 2024.

Now, Venice city officials say they will extend the tourist tax into 2025.

Additionally, officials have decided that last-minute visitors will have to pay a €10 fee instead of the €5, as the city continues its efforts to combat overtourism. The €5 fee will continue for tourists who make reservations at least four days in advance.

When will the fee come into effect?

According to Mayor Brugnaro, who recently announced the new changes, the new system will be implemented from 18 April 2025 until 27 July 2025, between the hours of 8:30 and 16:00, which are usually the peak hour for tourists.

Visitors to Venice will also have to pay a €10 tax if they visit the city from Friday to Sunday. The increased fee will also apply during holidays, such as Easter and Christmas, if applicable.

Mayor Brugnaro added that booking visits would be critical for the city.

“Venice is at the forefront in tackling overtourism. Bookability has allowed us to have the numbers of visitors to this city, numbers we have never had available before, and that gave us very interesting information.” Brugnaro said as per Schengen.news.

Who has to pay?

As per the rules around the entry fee, only daytrippers aged 14 and above who wish to enter the city are subject to the fee.

Venetian-born visitors, students, workers, commuters and those with second homes in the city who have paid local property tax, visitors who are staying overnight in the municipality and those participating in sports events, are all excluded from the entry fee.
