Uvongo Beach and Lagoon closed in Durban – Here’s where beaches remain open

Uvongo Beach and the Lagoon have been closed after high levels of E. coli were detected. Here are other Durban beaches that are closed.

The holiday season has been disrupted once more by the closure of certain Durban beaches, denying visitors their eagerly awaited getaway. On December 23, 2024, the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality announced via social media that Uvongo Beach and the Lagoon in Durban were closed.

According to the municipality’s statement, the detection of high levels of E. coli in the water led to the temporary closures. The Uvongo Beach, located on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, is one of the most popular in the coastal area. Find below other beaches to avoid as stated by the Ethekwini Municipality.

UVONGO BEACH AND LAGOON CLOSURE

The statement said swimming and other recreational activities were prohibited at Uvongo Beach and the Lagoon. It read: “The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality wishes to inform the public that swimming and other recreational activities at Uvongo Beach and Lagoon are currently prohibited due to high levels of E. coli detected in the water.”

The municipality said they would provide updates regarding the situation. It said: “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause and assure residents and visitors that updates will be provided as new developments arise. Your safety remains our top priority.”

OTHER CLOSED DURBAN BEACHES

Only two beaches remain closed in Durban, according to the eThekwini Municipality. They are Anstey’s Beach and Reunion. This is according to their latest list of Durban beaches and pools deemed safe to visit in the city.
