UKZN Medical School accepts only 2% of its applicants
Only 250 out of approximately 12 000 first year applicants will be accepted at UKZN Medical school in 2024.
With final matric results out, the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s(UKZN) Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, has the tough task of selecting its final 250 first year students for the MBChB programme.
12 000 APPLICATIONS FOR MEDICAL SCHOOL
That number however is a drop in the ocean compared to the more than 12 000 first year applications it received.
Similarly, according to the IOL, the institution has received 160 059 first year applications but despite the huge demand, it is only able to offer around 9000 first year places across all its programmes.

Unlike other programmes, there is a quota system in place for the first year medicine intake.
Of the 250 first year spaces:
- Five spaces are allocated to students from Lesotho
- 83 places are reserved for students from no-fee schools. 40 of which are drawn from across KZN’s 12 districts.
- 40 spots are also reserved for mature students
- The remaining 122 are allocated -69% of Africans, 19% Indians, 9% Coloureds, 2% Whites, 1% Other

UKZN’s Executive Director of Corporate Relations, Normah Zondo has appealed to applicants to be patient as firm offers are currently being made.
“Each applicant offered a place will be sent an SMS and an e-mail containing the link they can use to accept the offer from UKZN formally.”
Zondo emphasised that as with previous years, no walk-ins will be permitted. Once an applicant receives as SMS, they will have up to 72 hours to respond before their place to reallocated to another student.
Registration will continue until 24 February 2024.
