The UK joins the growing list of countries that have implemented an entry fee for visa-free visitors entering its borders.

This will not affect nations like South Africa – which are not visa-exempt for the United Kingdom. Travellers from countries with passports that are visa exempt will need to factor in the additional costs and requirements.

Following in the footsteps of other nations including the United States (US) and the  European Union (EU), the UK has announced its own scheme. The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) will require travellers to pay GBP 10 (R 240) for a two-year entry authorization permit.

ENTRY FEE

Authorities in the United Kingdom have announced that paid ETAs will be implemented for nationalities who are visa exempt. The fee has been set at GBP 10 per entrant.

Travellers visiting the UK from visa-exempt countries, such as the United States and European Union will be required to pay GBP 10, granting them entry for a duration of two years.

However, the first nation scheduled to join the scheme will be Qatar, with the implementation of the measure expected to be in place later this year.

BORDER CONTROLS

The introduction of the ETA aims to enhance border security and streamline entry procedures for the United Kingdom. It will also ensure a smooth travel experience for visitors.

The move symbolises a notable change in the UK’s approach to border controls. The initiative brings entry to the UK in line with international practices as well as marking a new era for travel to the UK for visa-free nationalities.
