WASHINGTON – The U.S. Congress on Monday passed the Electrify Africa Act, which aims to bring electricity to 50 million Africans by the year 2020.
The act was under deliberation for two years and now goes to President Barack Obama to be signed, according to news reports.
The bill will provide a framework for a major public-private partnership between the United States and sub-Saharan African countries to help millions of people gain access to reliable electricity.
In 2013 Obama outlined a Power Africa Initiative that aims to get electricity to 50 million people by 2020. The act should help achieve that goal by by providing a framework for companies to invest in promoting energy solutions in Africa, according to news reports.
