Two young boys die in another food poisoning related incident

Two minors have died in a food poisoning related incident after consuming sweets and chips bought from a local vendor.

The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed that two minors who consumed sweets and chips allegedly bought from a local vendor have died due to suspected food poisoning.  

The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday, 4 October. 

According to the Gauteng Department of Health four boys aged two, three, four and six from West Rand District allegedly consumed sweets and chips from a vendor at West Deep in Westonaria. 

Sadly two of the children aged two and three were declared dead on arrival at Bekkersdal West Community Health Centre.

The department said the other two boys aged four and six have been transferred to Leratong Hospital for observation and further management, they are both in a stable condition.

GRADE 1 LEARNERS PASS AWAY AFTER EATING BISCUITS AND JUICE

Earlier this week, the Gauteng Department of Health confirmed that two Grade 1 boy learners from Soweto, Gauteng passed away while two others are in a critical condition after eating biscuits and juice they allegedly bought from a local spaza shop.

The two boys from Kgauhelo Primary School and Karabo Primary School reportedly passed away on Sunday, 1 October.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said all the learners reportedly ate biscuits and juice bought from a spaza shop in their area. Their health began deteriorating after consuming the goods.

Two other learners from Ikemeleng Primary School are in a critical condition and are receiving medical treatment at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. The two learners were hospitalised after they also at the same biscuits and juice bought from the same spaza shop.

COUNSELLING OFFERED TO AFFECTED FAMILIES 

Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said they have since offered trauma counselling services to the affected families.

Modiba said the recent tragedy brings to four the number of children who died from food poisoning related incidents in as many days. 

“The Gauteng Department of Health would like to pass its heartfelt condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones and also wish speedy recovery to those that who are currently admitted at hospitals,” he added.
