Tshwane advises residents to update prepaid meters in three simple steps
The City of Tshwane has called on residents to update their prepaid electricity meters ahead of the imminent 24 November deadline.
The City of Tshwane has urged residents to update their prepaid electricity meters ahead of the approaching 24 November deadline. Failure to comply will result in customers being unable to purchase electricity beyond this date, as no extensions will be granted. The update, known as the Key Revision Number (KRN) 2, aims to enhance the security of the prepaid electricity system.
Simple steps to upgrade your prepaid meter
To update your prepaid meter, follow these steps after purchasing electricity:
- Enter the first 20-digit code on your meter and wait for it to be accepted.
- Repeat the process with the second 20-digit code.
- Finally, input the third 20-digit code, which is your current electricity purchase token.
For those experiencing issues while loading tokens, Eskom’s digital assistant, Alfred the Eskom Chatbot, is available to provide guidance.
“Alfred offers a step-by-step solution to resolve prepaid meter token problems,” Eskom stated.
Customers can access the chatbot at www.alfred.eskom.co.za/chatroom/.
How to check your meter status
Eskom has also urged customers to verify whether their meters are ready for the KRN2 system. Entering the code 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on the meter will confirm its status. If the screen displays a “1,” the meter is still on KRN1 and requires an update. A “2” confirms that the upgrade is complete.
For meters still operating on KRN1, customers must buy electricity tokens from authorised vendors. These tokens will include the necessary codes to complete the update.
Eskom has reassured customers that support is readily available.
“If you’re struggling, contact our support team at 0860 037 566,” Eskom advised.
