Leading the continent with an EPI score of 53.1, Gabon stands out for its robust environmental policies and conservation efforts. Gabon has made substantial investments in preserving its rainforests, which cover nearly 88% of its land area, as reported by Business Day.

Gabon’s government has been proactive in reducing deforestation rates, protecting biodiversity, and promoting sustainable logging practices. Additionally, the country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions has positioned it as a leader in Africa’s environmental landscape.

Zimbabwe follows closely, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental health and ecosystem vitality. Despite facing economic challenges, Zimbabwe has made sustainable agricultural practices a priority, water conservation, and wildlife protection.

The country’s efforts to combat desertification have contributed significantly to its environmental performance. Key efforts in this area are reforestation initiatives and the promotion of agroforestry. Furthermore, Zimbabwe’s dedication to conserving its rich biodiversity, including iconic species like elephants and rhinoceroses, underscores its commitment to sustainable development.

Renowned for its wide-ranging national parks and wildlife reserves, Botswana has made significant strides in preserving its natural heritage. The country’s policy of high-value, low-impact tourism has not only contributed to its economic growth but also ensured the protection of its wilderness areas.

Botswana’s efforts to combat poaching and its commitment to sustainable water management, particularly in the arid regions of the Kalahari Desert, have further contributed to its status as one of Africa’s cleanest countries.
