A UK-based production company has announced that it will begin filming a documentary about the circumstances leading to the murder of Reeva Steenkamp by Oscar Pistorius.
The shooting of Steenkamp through the locked bathroom door of Pistorius’ house took place on 14 February three years ago, and Pistorius later claimed he thought he was shooting an intruder. In December 2015 Pistorius was found guilty of murder by a full panel of five judges of the Supreme Court of Appeal.
It was reported on the weekend that “Oscar Pistorius: Killing a Dream” will start filming in March, with a 2017 release date. Collaborating on the movie will be Gareth Davies, boxing correspondent for the Telegraph, who also reports on Paralympic sport. Davies has reportedly known Pistorius since he was 16.
Vaughan Sivell, the documentary’s director and the head of Western Edge Pictures, reportedly said about the film, “For us it’s the story of South Africa alongside the story of Oscar, it’s so cinematic, it’s a real once-in-a lifetime project in terms of scale.”
Sivell is also the director of the highly acclaimed “Mr Calzaghe”, a newly released documentary about the boxer Joe Calzaghe.
While Sivell’s movie is a documentary, in 2013 the names of Ryan Gosling and Charlize Theron were mentioned in connection with a feature movie about Pistorius, although those rumours seem to have dried up. A year later, according to news reports, Pistorius said he was writing his own story about the events and that a movie was “inevitable”.
Pistorius is under house arrest and his lawyers have said they will appeal the murder conviction. He faces a possible 15-year jail sentence for Steenkamp’s murder of Reeva and is due back in court on April 18 for sentencing.
