The City of Tshwane has informed residents about possible minor delays in waste collection services due to the introduction of new service providers starting 15 July.

The city assures residents that the new providers will enhance the overall waste collection experience and asks for patience as they adapt to the city’s landscape and operations.

NEW PROVIDERS, SAME SCHEDULE FOR WASTE COLLECTION

While the waste collection schedule remains unchanged, the city reminds residents to place their bins outside on the designated waste collection day mornings. The stability of the waste collection system is a top priority, and the introduction of these new providers is a step towards achieving that goal.

“We are fighting very hard to get you value for the money that you pay for the services that you get in the city,” said Cilliers Brink, the DA mayor of Tshwane.

“We have implemented three new rules with waste contractors. First, the new vehicles must be roadworthy. Second, each truck must have tracking devices. Third, these rules must also apply to any subcontractors.”

CHALLENGES AND RESISTANCE

Despite these efforts, the waste collection transition has not been without challenges. Brink mentioned that about 60% of the previous contractors were not retained due to non-compliance with the new standards, leading to resistance and even violence at landfill sites. City officials have faced threats from individuals with business interests unable to meet the new requirements.

“Those who stand to benefit from you not getting value for money will fight back,” Brink warned. “We will not stand for it.”

As the city moves forward with these waste collection changes, the commitment to improving services and ensuring residents receive value for their money remains steadfast.
