BESTER ESCAPE CASE: ACCUSED NUMBERS ONE AND THREE SEEK TO CHALLENGE BAIL DENIAL

According to SABC News, on Friday, Senohe Matsoara and Teboho Lipholo’s appeal will be heard in the Bloemfontein High Court.

The duo are accused numbers one and three in the Bester escape case. Matsoara is a former supervisor at the G4S-managed Mangaung Correctional Centre (MCC) that the serial rapist escaped from in May 2022, while Lipholo was a camera technician for a company that managed the security cameras at the prison.

As previously reported, on 29 May, Magistrate Khabisi said the interest of justice did not permit the release of Matsoara, Lipholo, Motenyani Masukela and Tieho Makhotsa on bail as the applicants did not deal with various factors effectively in their applications.

One of the five bail applicants on that day – Nastassja Jansen, was granted bail. She joined accused number two, Zolile Sekeleni, who was also released on R10 000 bail soon after the case got going.

On Wednesday, 28 June, three more former G4S employees accused of helping Bester escape appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.

Joel Makhetha, Moeketsi Ramolula and Thabang Mier are due back in court on Monday, 3 July, for the State to decide whether they will oppose bail or not.

The trio was added to the main matter. All 12 suspects are due back in court on 8 August. The case was postponed on 20 June for further police investigation.
