With tears and pride, Jenna Lowe’s family and friends paid tribute yesterday to the 20-year-old activist who passed away on 8 June 2015 after a bilateral lung transplant.

Her mother said “Three-and-half years ago at our first fundraiser for Jenna, I said it takes a village to raise a child.

“But it takes an extraordinary child to change the consciousness of a village.”

After being diagnosed with a rare lung disease called pulmonary arterial hypertension, Jenna raised awareness about organ donation in South Africa, and her ‘Get me to 21′ campaign spurred thousands to sign up as organ donors.

At Saturday’s memorial at her old school Herschel Girls in Claremont, Cape Town, Jenna’s father Stuart thanked her for a “lifetime of joy” and shared most parents’ philosophies when he said “Gabi and I always had a mantra that our children must grow up slowly”. He then turned to Jenna’s sister Kristi and said “I’m sorry you had to grow up so fast.”

Kristi said “I didn’t expect this to be the end” and sang Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”, one of Jenna’s favourite songs.

The Lowe family are left not only emotionally bereft but also burdened with huge outstanding medical costs for Jenna, and the cost of relocating back home to Cape Town.

For anyone wanting to shower them with love who can’t be there, please consider a donation – no matter how small – to the Love Jenna campaign. ‪#‎Love4Jenna‬  – www.givengain.com/cause/6172/projects/15593/
