Table Mountain Cableway shuts down for seven weeks
Cape Town’s popular Table Mountain Cableway has closed up shop for the next seven weeks for its annual maintenance.
Table Mountain Cableway closes
The Table Mountain aerial cableway has shut down operations from yesterday, 15 July for extensive maintenance.
According to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC), they will close for seven weeks to complete the annual maintenance as well as replace the track ropes to which the cable car is attached.
The work will be carried out with a team of experts from the original equipment manufacturer in Switzerland.
“We will perform a full cable replacement for the first time since 1997 revamp, as well as maintenance of the hanging and running gear, as per Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) specifications.” TMACC said in their blog.
“Just like how we take our cars in for regular servicing, based on actual mileage, we rigorously inspect and service every aspect of the cableway, ensuring consistent alignment with international best practice and the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) specifications,” technical executive, Andries de Vries said as per The Herald.
Everything to be closed during the maintenance
TMACC also added that the Cableway, along with all commercial and public outlets and operations at both the Upper and Lower Stations on Table Mountain will remain closed to the public for the duration of the maintenance. This also includes all shops, restaurants, and ablution facilities.
While the cable cars maybe shut down for now, hiking routes will still be available for hikers and climbers to enjoy.
The cableway will re-open, weather permitting on Monday, 2 September 2024.
