African National Congress (ANC) MP Supra Mahumapelo is under fire from some of his former comrades for going back on his word and supporting a vote to remove Busisiwe Mkhwebane as the Public Protector.

Mahumapelo is one of the 318 MPs that voted in favour of Mkhwebane’s impeachment, something which definitely didn’t go unnoticed.

In a previous engagement with media, he had said: “There is no way that the African National Congress here in Parliament will support the motion of the opposition, in the form of the DA, to remove the public protector. It’s not going to happen. So I just thought we must make it clear that it is not going to happen.”

DID SUPRA MAHUMAPELO DUMP RET FACTION?

Supra Mahumapelo’s sudden switch comes as a surprise, particularly as he had asserted that they would do all they can in their power to block efforts to remove Busisiwe Mkhwebane. He was always considered part of the ANC’s RET faction, which opposes Ramaphosa.

Mahumapelo was subsequently called out by former MKMVA spokesperson and leader of the African Radical Economic Transformation Alliance (Areta) Carl Niehaus for not voting to have Mkhwebane stay in office.

Mahumapelo didn’t take too kindly to being criticised and called on Niehaus to stay out of ANC matters.

“I am not an Areta member and never will be one. I owe you no accountability on how I respond to my ANC complexities of the moment, Carl,” said Mahumapelo.

Many on X, formerly known as Twitter, were quick to label Mahumapelo a sellout.
