CAPE TOWN – Two people reportedly died and 32 were injured this evening when a double-decker bus caught fire in Onverwacht Road, Strand, in the Western Cape. The SA Police Service said petrol bombs were thrown at the bus in Lwandle.
According to the ER24 Emergency Medical Service, when paramedics arrived on the scene the bus was engulfed in flames and a crowd had gathered with locals from a “nearby informal settlement” tending to some of the injured.
Four of the injured sustained serious injuries and have been hospitalised, 28 were treated on the site for smoke inhalation and burn wounds. The two people who tragically died were both believed to be males who succumbed to the fire.
The incident was attended by police and local authorities who will conduct an investigation.
