The South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC) management has announced that it will reinstate the seven dismissed news employees.
The public broadcaster says it has instructed its legal team not to proceed with further legal action in this regard.
The SA National Editors Forum (SANEF) has welcomed the decision.
The SACP said it will “continue its campaign to bring to an end the administrative and governance decay that is destroying the #SABC”, and reiterated that the journalists were “unlawfully dismissed by the SABC’s despotic regime enforcing its unconstitutional editorial edict it decreed”.
The SABC has been under fire from many South Africans since COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng banned the broadcoast of violent protests in the country, in the lead-up to the elections.
While many welcomed the SABC’s decision, others lamented the fact that this is making headlines rather than #PoliticalKillings – the wave of horrific killings of ANC election candidates in the run-up to the elections, including the latest shooting last night of Nceba Dywili (35) who was a candidate for Ward 4 (Walmer Township) in Nelson Mandela Bay.
