Representing South Africa, Kevin Anderson fought his way to a close victory against France’s Benoit Paire in Brisbane, Australia, on Wednesday evening local time at the ATP Cup.
The first set went to the Frenchman, 6-2. In the second set, Anderson fought back for SA to level the match 7-6 against a frustrated Paire.
In the third and final set, Paire streaked ahead, but Anderson clawed back to win the match in another tie-break, 7-6. Despite his outbursts on the court (and spitting!), Paire embraced Anderson at the end.
France’s Gilles Simon won the first singles match of the evening 2-6 6-2 6-2 against SA’s Lloyd Harris.
The doubles match between the two countries is currently being played, and will be the decider.
