In honour of Human Rights Day today 21 March 2017, Constitution Hill will be opening its doors to everyone for FREE!
“Please come and take a tour for free, and learn about this historical prison site, as well as the Constitutional Court!” says ConHill marketing assistant Sibongile Ndhlovu.
21 March is recognised as Human Rights Day in South Africa, a day to commemorate the Sharpeville Massacre which took place on this day in 1960 when 69 people were killed by the apartheid police during a peaceful protest march.
Constitution Hill is a national heritage site and home to the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
Dawn Robertson, ConHill CEO, describes it as a “living breathing museum where the past, present and future collide in a glorious paradox that celebrates the victory of our present day democracy. It leaves you forever changed with the unrelenting resolve ‘never again must one human being treat another human being in this manner’.”
ConHill presents art exhibitions and guided tours to the Women’s Goal museum (once home to Winnie Mandela, Albertina Sisulu and Fatima Meer), Number Four museum, and Old Fort museum… where South Africa’s leading political activists, including Nelson Mandela, Joe Slovo and Mahatma Gandhi, were detained… and where you’ll learn about the Food Drums and the weekly showers that were allowed, but often denied for months.
President Jacob Zuma will today lead the national commemoration of Human Rights Day in King Williams Town, Eastern Cape Province. The highlight of the 2017 commemoration will be the honouring of Black Consciousness leader Bantu Steve Biko, on this 40th anniversary since he was killed by the apartheid state.
The President will join Nontsikelelo Biko and family at Biko’s home town in Ginsberg, to unveil the grave site and memorial of Biko.
