DStv is among the biggest casualties of household budget-cutting exercises as South Africans struggle to make ends meet.

That is according to a recent survey conducted by online research company InfoQuest.
Some 300 nationally-representative consumers were asked what policies or contracts they had cancelled over the past six months.
A total of 18% of the participants in the survey – which equates to around 54 people – said they terminated their DStv subscriptions.

That was second to gym memberships (28%) as members looked to tighten their wallets.
Gym and DStv memberships are regarded as ‘luxuries’.

A significant number of respondents also cancelled essential items like short-term and life insurance, medical aid and retirement annuities.
