Randfontein Police arrested the driver for possession of an unlicensed firearm during a crime prevention operation aimed at getting dangerous weapons off the street.
Police spokesman Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said the driver was among 97 people arrested during the 24 hour blitz and that the weapon had been sent for ballistics testing.
Sergeant Hendricks said: “Violence is the leading cause of death in South Africa and firearms are the cause of many deaths and it our duty to protect our community and keep them safe”.
The owner of the gun has appeared in court and has been released pending the results of ballistic tests.
