A new report from Stats SA has revealed the extent to which South Africa has turned its back on government. As reported by Daily Investor, South Africans are turning wholesale to the private sector for services previously offered by the state.

A consequence of this lack of trust is that fewer government services are being used by South Africans compared to 2019. Only 38% of South Africans are using public transport, 32% public clinics, and a mere 18% use the South African Police Services (SAPS). All are less than previously recorded.

The Stats SA report results show the proportion of individuals who rated government services as satisfactory declined in 9 out of 12 government services between 2019 and 2023. Trust in 10 of the 15 government institutions also declined between 2019 and 2023.

ASKED FOR BRIBES

A higher proportion of South Africans were asked to pay a bribe by a traffic official in 2023 versus 2019. Some other interesting takeaways are the fact that SAPS and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) were more used outside of main metros. They are therefore more trusted outside of main metros than in them.
