1. Stormberg Mountains
Located in the Eastern Cape, the cold Stormberg mountain range occasionally receives snow, particularly around the towns of Dordrecht and Barkly East, which in recent winters have seen some epic snowfall.
2. Outeniqua Mountains
The Western Cape’s Outeniqua Mountains can experience snowfall on its higher peaks during the winter months, particularly around the Outeniqua Pass. The Pass, which lies just north of George on the national highway that connects George and the Garden Route with Oudtshoorn and the Little Karoo, is a must if you yearn for breathtaking views and photographs, especially when it’s snowed up!
3. Hex River Mountains
Also in the Western Cape, the Hex River Mountain range, particularly around the Hex River Valley, can see snow on the higher elevations and sometimes even lower down close to the town of De Doorns.
4. Nieu-Bethesda
Situated in the Eastern Cape, the quaint village of Nieu-Bethesda at the foot of the Sneeuberge Mountains can occasionally experience a snowy blizzard, and when it does, the little town is transformed into a winter wonderland. Quite mesmerizing to see!
5. Kouga Mountains
The Kouga mountains in the Eastern Cape, which includes the Baviaanskloof area, sometimes gets snow at higher elevations.
6. Golden Gate Highlands National Park
A three-hour drive from Bloemfontein sits the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State and wintertime sees it get pretty snowed-up! Temperatures in the national park can drop to between an icy -9 and -15 degrees Celcius, creating perfect conditions for snowfall.
