Several eThekwini areas to experience a 9-hour water disruption
The eThekwini municipality has informed residents of a planned water supply disruption in various areas due to necessary maintenance work.
The eThekwini municipality has scheduled a water outage in multiple areas to carry out critical maintenance on the electrical systems at two pump stations.
The maintenance will occur on Wednesday, 18 September, from 8:00 to 17:00, during which water pumping to dependent reservoirs will be suspended.
Firwood Reservoir is to be fully closed, causing a water outage
The Firwood Reservoir will be fully shut down, with its outlets remaining closed for the entire maintenance period. Areas that depend on this reservoir, including Malvern, Queensburgh, Northdene, Shallcross, and Moseley Park, will experience a complete water outage. The eThekwini municipality has confirmed that all other reservoir outlets remain open and closely monitored.
The municipality explained, “We will be tracking water levels to manage demand and may close additional outlets if necessary to prevent excessive water loss.”
Water Conservation urged for residents
While some areas will still receive water, the municipality has urged residents to conserve it during the maintenance period. If water levels drop too quickly, additional outlets may also be closed to speed up recovery time.
“We ask that residents use water sparingly to avoid further disruptions,” stated the eThekwini municipality.
The areas potentially affected by the water outage, reduced water supply and the need for conservation include:
- Firwood Reservoir: Malvern, Queensburgh, Northdene, Shallcross, and Moseley Park.
- Chatsworth 4 Reservoir: Arena Park, Buffels Bosch, Chatsworth Town Centre, Crossmoor, Ehlanzeni, Klaarwater, Kwamgaga, Montford, Moorton, Risecliff, Welbedacht East and West, Westcliff, and Woodhurst.

“This is necessary to maintain the long-term efficiency of our infrastructure,” the municipality stated.
