Sea Point Promenade upgrades to be completed by end of the year
The major upgrade of the Sea Point Promenade and Granger Bay parking area has now received a final completion date after many delays.
Sea Point upgrades still underway
The City of Cape Town has revealed it remains hopeful that the long-term upgrade project along Sea Pont, Mouille Point and Granger Bay will be completed in December 2024.
According to Cape Town Etc, this news comes after many delays in the Sea Point Promenade rehabilitation project. The project’s new contractor recently started work on 22 May after it came to a standstill in February due to a slow work rate that then pushed the initial completion date of June back by six months.
Eddie Andrews, Deputy Mayor and MMC for Spacial Planning and Environment, gave the nod that the upgrades should be completed by December, if all went according to plan.
“Over the next six months, the contractor will prioritise the work according to their programme and we can confirm that, currently, all is on track to complete the project within the time frame,” IOL reported.
“Encasement of a wall, encasement of the stormwater pipe, concrete works which includes the staircases which will be the priority before the end of the financial year.” Andrews added.
WHAT’S TO BE UPGRADED?
The scheduled work for the promenade and Granger Bay parking area project include:
- Upgrading of Granger Bay parking area
- Construction of a rock revetment
- New Fort Road play park
- Additional walkways
- Additional coastal vegetation and lawn planting
- Installation of interpretive signage to give heritage information
- Public art in the Sea Point Library
- Encasement of a wall
- Encasement of a stormwater pipe
- Staircase concrete work
PROMENADE BUILDINGS GET MAKEOVER
In other revamp news, ablution buildings along the Sea Point promenade have undergone a funky transformation, as local artists recently collaborated to paint the once-ordinary buildings in an open-air art exhibit for the public.
Property developer, Blok teamed up with local artist agency SJ Artists in a project intent on elevating public spaces in Cape Town’s popular landmarks. The project also aims to provide a platform for Cape Town’s artists.
Each of the murals are accompanied by an informative plaque with information about the artists and their work.
