School Placement: 50 000 learners not placed for 2024

The Department of Education set to build satellite schools and mobile classrooms for learners who haven’t been granted school placement

Nearly 50 000 grade 1 and grade 8 learners are yet to be granted school placement for the 2024 school admissions. This is according to an update given by MEC Matome Chiloane on Tuesday.

SCHOOL PLACEMENT CRITERIA

The department had begun placing learners with complete application since September beginning with learners who live closest to the school, and not on a first come first serve basis.

This is followed by:

  • Learners who have siblings already in the school
  • Parents/gaurdians work address is within the school feeder zone
  • Home address is with 30km radius
  • Home address is beyond 30km

SPACES AVAILABLE

Potential grade1 learners account for the bulk of the unplaced learners, with 30 277 out of 47 101 still needing a spot.

Luckily for parents there is still space available for up to 56 710 across the province.

Meanwhile there is still 40539 spaces available for the remaining 16 824 grade 8 learners for next year.

Chiloane, has urged parents to regularly check their applications as there are still 6 747 applicants who have been sent placement offers and are yet to be accepted.

HIGH PRESSURE AREAS

The MEC has asked parents to not stress over the placement of their child in school is they have yet not been offered a space.

“Schooling is a constitutional right, and as a department we will comply meaning that every learner will be offered a place at a school. Children will be in school next year”, stressed Chiloane.

Chiloane added that in high pressure areas, school have been given money to build additional classrooms to accommodate learners.
