SAPS issues warning over Facebook Marketplace after double murder
The South African Police Service has issued a warning over criminals who are exploiting Facebook Marketplace to rob their victims.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a warning the public to vet people they do business with online.
This comes after the tragic news last weekend when two brothers, aged 19 and 30, were robbed and killed after responding to a Facebook Marketplace advert.
Aaron and Kyle Alberts were murdered after approaching a home in Motherwell outside Gqeberha on Saturday, 6 April.
According to the EWN website, the brothers were responding to an advert placed on Facebook Marketplace for a television that they wished to purchase.
“The brothers went to a house in Ceru Steet in NU 5 in Motherwell and were informed that no such ad was placed, and the occupants of the house bore no knowledge of any sale. While still at the address, they were approached by two suspects who shot and robbed them.
“Their cellphones, cash, and vehicles were all taken, with the perpetrators providing the wrong address to mislead them,” said Eastern Cape police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu.
LATEST INCIDENT
Their bakkie was recovered abandoned not far from the scene.
The provincial serious and violent crime investigation unit in Gqeberha is investigating two cases of murder.
Police have called on anyone with information regarding the murders to come forward.
“We appeal to anyone who can assist us in tracing these cold and callous perpetrators to contact D/Capt Monde Sithole on 082 457 2812 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station. All information is confidential, and callers may remain anonymous.”
The latest incident follows an increase in criminals exploiting Facebook Marketplace to rob their victims in South Africa.
These criminals post false ads for multiple items, such as TVs and solar equipment.
However, the most common item listed for sale on false ads is vehicles, with very attractive prices, often too good to be true.
