This week, the club announced Wayne Sandilands as their new goalkeeper coach.
The former Pirates keeper is only three years older than Mpontshane, so bringing a keeper close to retirement to the club won’t make much sense. Instead of bringing in the former Platinum Stars shot-stopper, Usuthu are more likely to lure in Nigerian gloveman Daniel Akpeyi, who is currently with Swallows.

Mpontshane has had his ups and downs during his eight years with the Soweto Giants and is not likely to get game time this season should he stay with the Buccaneers. His contract was extended to a year which ultimately infuriated Pirates supporters.
Pirates fans have been critical of the former Platinum Stars man following a series of mistakes in goal. Last year, he allowed Kaizer Chiefs’ Yusuf Maart to score a 60-metre wonder goal after coming off his line in the second half of the Soweto derby.
