South African migrant workers in the US are out-earning Americans in their own country with a R2m salary a year. Here’s how they do it…

A government report reveals that South African migrant workers in the US earn nearly R2 million annually—surpassing the income of natural-born citizens.
And this figure may be enticing to some, given that US President Donald has offered Afrikaners the opportunity to seek asylum in the country.
The controversial statesman, like his aid Elon Musk, believes that white South Africans suffer “racial discrimination” under local government.
SA MIGRANT WORKERS EARN A STAGGERING AMOUNT IN THE US
In a report published earlier this month, it was revealed that South African migrant workers are among the top-earning migrants in the US.
The US Census Bureau published a report that, as of 2023, SA had a migrant worker group that earned a median income of $107 595 (R1,8 million) per year. This figure surprassed the national average household income of $80 610 (R1,4 million).
Topping SA are countries like India and Australian migrant workers, who earn an average of $157 004 (R2,9 million) and $116 649 (R2,1 million) respectively.
According to Business Tech, this stems from a high demand for their skills in areas like healthcare, technology, engineering, and finance. South Africans are also favoured over their educational backgrounds and professional expertise.
The publication added that the US also has immigration policies in place that supports skilled labourers.
WHAT DO SOUTH AFRICANS EARN?
While South African migrant workers are living comfortably in the US, how does it compare to the average salaries back home?
According to data from Stats SA’s quarterly employment survey (QES), the average salary for employees is R303,648 per year or R26 793 per month.
However, this is likely not an accurate representation for many South Africans, as the average reflects an equal distribution among all salaried workers.
Stats SA recorded that the median salary – the midpoint of wages across the board – is calculated at R5,417 a month.
Data also revealed that the median for the top 5% of workers was around R35 000 per month. In stark comparison, the 5% bottom, earned R1000 a month or less.
