RIP: Tito Mboweni’s funeral arrangements announced

The funeral for Tito Mboweni, former governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), is scheduled for Saturday, 19 October, in Tzaneen, Limpopo.
Mboweni, 65, passed away on 12 October following a short illness.
TRIBUTES CONTNUE TO POUR IN FOR TITO MBOWENI
Tributes from across the world continue to pour in for Mboweni who has been described as an astute, disciplined and selfless activist.
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) hailed Mboweni for guiding the country through periods of great uncertainty, with a steady hand on the economy during the global financial crisis of 2008 as governor, and later through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic as finance minister.
As previously reported, Mboweni was the first labour minister in post-apartheid South Africa and served until 1998. Thereafter, he joined the SARB as an advisor and became the first black governor for a decade from 1999 to 2009.
“He was a passionate central banker and played a key role in building the SARB into the professional, formidable and purposeful organisation it is today,” a statement from the reserve bank read.
The African National Congress (ANC) which Mboweni joined in 1985 said he was a critical architect of the country’s post-apartheid labour legislation laying the foundation for collective bargaining and establishing labour courts to uphold the rights of workers.
“Tito will be remembered not only for his immense contributions to the economy, but for his unwavering connection to the people he served. His legacy of dedication, innovation and service will remain a guiding light for generations to come,” ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said.
Meanwhile, ANC secretary-general is expected to lead a delegation to extend condolences to Mboweni’s family in Killarney, Johannesburg, on Tuesday afternoon.
