Reports that ANC NEC will Vote Today on Motion for Zuma to Step Down

TSHWANE – It has been reported by City Press in South Africa that a motion for President Jacob Zuma to step down was tabled at a meeting of the ANC NEC (National Executive Committee) yesterday, and will be voted on today.

The results from the vote will reportedly be announced late Sunday evening or Monday morning. Some were pushing for the vote to be by secret ballot which would allow protection to those who fear repercussions from going against the President.

However, according to the City Press, one pro-Zuma NEC member said: “The secret ballot is not a done deal. We won’t let it go down without a fight.”

The motion was tabled by Derek Hanekom, Minister of Tourism, according to City Press.

The African National Congress (ANC) NEC posted photos to Twitter yesterday (which showed Zuma in them), with a caption saying “The ANC NEC sitting today and tomorrow in an ordinary scheduled meeting at St George’s Hotel, Irene.”

In a series of tweets on the ANC’s twitter page on Friday, SA Presidential Spokesperson Zizi Kodwa had said: “Emerging out of this meeting, the ANC must be united & strong… We can’t dismiss some of the issues our veterans are raising.”

Referring to Cosatu’s recent announcement that it is backing Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to be the next ANC leader, Kodwa tweeted: “ANC has not officially opened the debate on succession.”

He also said that “the Integrity Commission will meet with the President, not appearing, on the 3rd of December to discuss the health and state of ANC.”
