Award-winning journalist Redi Tlhabi has spoken out on who she will vote for in the upcoming 2024 elections, saying she was leaning towards smaller parties who can make an impactful change.

Tlhabi, while speaking to the 5am Breakfast Club, said none of the established political parties stood out to her.

“I know exactly what I’m voting against. It’s so clear what stance I need to take. I would also say memory is such a powerful tool.

We underestimate the importance of memory when it comes to informing our political decisions today.

My position would be based on memory and what I can see before me,” Tlhabi said.

GENERAL AND PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS TO BE HELD IN MAY

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the general and provincial elections will be held on 29 May 2024.

The renowned journalist said it was appropriate now for one to boldly state who they will be voting for.

“When I worked as a broadcaster in South Africa, I didn’t declare who I was voting for.

It just didn’t help to put it out there because you have to take a popularity of views and voices.

I didn’t want to create a situation where listeners would claim I am criticising a particular party more than the other,” Tlhabi said.

REDI TLHABI GRAVITATING TOWARDS NEWER, SMALLER PARTIES

Tlhabi said if a political party that has a track record of not fulfilling their electoral promise, that should not be overlooked.

“I really think we just have to refuse to let politicians dribble us.

If someone has a track record of not fulfilling their electoral promise, we can’t unsee that because it is the election season.

For me, none of the established parties stand out. I am gravitating towards the newer ones. I am observing what Rise Mzansi is doing and between now and May I will make a choice.

My choice is limited and I’m glad it is among the newer, smaller impactful parties,” Tlhabi said.
