Rand Water concerned about high consumption in Gauteng
Rand Water has requested that metro municipalities encourage their citizens to use water sparingly.
Rand Water says its storage systems are declining faster in parts of Gauteng metros.
This is reportedly due to high consumption from some areas of the Gauteng metros.
The bulk water supplier said despite pumping normally, systems have been declining since the beginning of the week.
Rand Water has requested that metro municipalities encourage their citizens to use water sparingly.
“The water system is interrelated, and high consumption in one area may affect other areas and cause interruption of the system,” the water utility said.
Rand Water said it holds daily technical meetings with Gauteng Metro Municipalities to reduce high consumption.
ENTITY ISSUES STERN WARNING
In December 2023, Rand Water issued a stern caution to the metros that if high consumption persists, the water systems are on a trajectory toward imminent collapse.
“Rand Water hereby cautions that, should this high consumption continue unabated, the water systems will eventually collapse,” the entity said at the time.
The implications of such a collapse would be severe, raising critical concerns about the sustainability of water supply in one of South Africa’s most populous and economically significant regions.
