President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent a warning to underperforming ministers and deputies ahead of the 2024 elections. Speaking during the ANC election manifesto review session, the president said that ‘a lot of things will happen’ to underperforming ministers in his cabinet.

The meeting was held to determine whether the 2019 manifesto objectives had been achieved. The report will then help to come up with achievable programs for the next five years that are not over-ambitious.

“At the center of the 2019 election manifesto was the commitment to work together with our people and various formations in our country to transform the economy and to serve the people of our country,” said Ramaphosa. The president further hinted that together with his deputy, they have been constantly meeting with ministers to check on the progress.

NEXT CABINET MEETING

According to TimesLive, the President said that he will be meeting with the ministers over the next six months. He said that during the meeting, the deputy ministers and other key officials must be present to account for what they have done in executing their priorities. “We said we are not going to accept any excuses or explanations because the priorities they have set out must be addressed, met, and executed, otherwise a lot of things will happen,” said Ramaphosa.

PRESIDENT’S EARLIER WARNING

While announcing the new cabinet in 2019, President Ramaphosa said that every minister will be held accountable. The ministers and their deputies were to be evaluated regularly against clearly set targets. At the time, he vowed that action will be taken against unsatisfactory implementation.

Minister Maropene Ramokgopa had previously indicated that Ramaphosa’s reviews were aimed at improving service delivery from the state. The president had come under fire for failing to hold his cabinet accountable after signing performance agreements with them.

MAPPING THE 2024 MANIFESTO

President Ramaphosa pointed out that the 2024 manifesto will include ANC members’ views, as well as their affiliated partners. Members of the public will be engaged after all views have been collected and outlined on what the ruling party has done in implementing their 2019 manifesto.

However, the president agreed that there’s still a lot to be done regarding the execution of the 2019 manifesto. “In other words, the glass is not empty, the glass is half full and moving towards being full. That’s precisely where we are,” he stated.
