Qatar Airways to operate up to 35 SA frequencies over summer
Qatar Airways recently announced that it will operate up to 35 weekly frequencies to South Africa during the summer peak season.
Qatar Airways’ South Africa summer capacity
With the start of the southern hemisphere summer season at the end of October, Qatar Airways has said that their SA summer capacity will help unlock tourism potential in the country.
According to the airline, Cape Town will operate 11 weekly flights, rising to 12 between 17 December and 13 January.
Johannesburg services will be 18 per week from 27 October for the season, while Durban will also be served five times a week via Mozambique.
20 years of operation in South Africa
In January 2025, it will also be 20 years since Qatar Airways started flying to South Africa, with the launch of the airline’s Cape Town and Johannesburg routes in 2005.
Qatar Airways Chief Commercial Officer, Mr Thierry Antinori said that South Africa was a popular tourism destination and a vital part of their business across the African continent.
“As we look ahead to 2025, and celebrating two decades of connecting the country to the rest of the world, these services will offer greater choice for people wanting to visit this beautiful country during the summer months.” Antinori said.
A commitment to Africa
This summer flying programme in South Africa comes on the back of previously announced commitments to the African continent by Qatar Airways.
These include the recently announced acquisition of a 25 per cent share in South Africa’s premium independent carrier, Airlink.
Qatar Airways’ Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said that their investment in Airlink further demonstrated how integral they saw Africa being to their business’ future.
“This partnership not only demonstrates our confidence in Airlink, as a company that is resilient, agile, financially robust and governed on sound principles, but also in Africa as a whole, showing huge potential that I am delighted we are able to help start realising.” Al-Meer said in the statement.
In June, the airline also began services to Kinshasa, simultaneously increasing flights to Angola from one to four a week.
