Qantas brings its Airbus to South Africa
Australian airline, Qantas has officially touched down at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport with its Airbus A380, marking a first for the airline.
Flight QF63 landed on South African soil yesterday, 30 September, officially marking the doubling of capacity on the route.
According to Travel News, the Airbus A380 can accommodate 485 passengers and will provide an additional 130 000 seats annually. The aircraft has also reintroduced first class and doubled the number of premium economy seats for South African and Australian travellers.
Flights will operate five times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
“Qantas has a rich history of flying to South Africa over the past 72 years, having operated Constellations and Super Constellations, Electras, 707s, 747s, Dreamliners and now the A380,” Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace said as per Australian Aviation.
“The A380 is a favourite among our frequent flyers and it will be great to see the Flying Kangaroo in the land of the springbok,” Wallace added.
South Africa to Australia flights ramped up
In related news, South African travellers looking for flights to Australia this December will find even more capacity from South African Airways (SAA), now that it has ramped up flights to and from Johannesburg and Perth.
Starting 8 December , SAA will increase the frequency of its nonstop service from Johannesburg to Perth to four flights per week.
Then from 7 January 2025, the airline will increase to five flights per week on a year-round basis.
Flight schedule
According to the new flight schedule, flights will operate from 8 December as follows:
- Flights will depart Johannesburg on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 20:35, arriving in Perth, Australia at 12:10+1.
- Departing flights from Perth will then take off on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, arriving in Johannesburg at 05:10+1.
Then, starting 7 January 2025, the additional flight will depart Johannesburg on Mondays, returning to Perth, Australia on Tuesdays.
