Seventy-three names have been put forward to take over the position of public protector, once Thuli Madonsela leaves at the end of her seven-year term in October.
Of the total 73 nominations that were handed in by Friday last week and announced today, however, numerous have already declined the offer. These include Madonsela herself, who cannot stand for the position again; state prosecutor Gerrie Nel, most recently in court facing Oscar Pistorius; Nelson Mandela’s widow Graca Machel; former National Prosecuting Authority chief Vusi Pikoli; and former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene.
Makhosi Khoza, who is leading the nomination process, reportedly told media she had not been approached by any political party lobbying for a specific candidate.
Some of the nominees include advocate Dali Mpofu, Western Cape High Court Judge Siraj Desai‚ Deputy Public Protector Kevin Malunga and Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions Willie Hofmeyr.
