During his visit to Cape Town for The Earthshot Prize award ceremony, Prince William shared that Africa has always been dear to him. He arrived in the Mother City on 4 November 2024.

Prince William proposed to Kate in Africa

In a post on social media, Prince William shared that Africa was a place where he found comfort as a teenager. It is also where he proposed to his wife.

“Africa has always held a special place in my heart.”

William proposed to Kate Middleton with his late mother Princess Diana’s diamond and sapphire ring during a trip to Kenya in 2010. The couple got married the following year.

Kate recently underwent chemotherapy treatment after a cancer diagnosis. She did not accompany William to South Africa, but instead stayed home with their children.

Cape Town visit: First engagement

William’s first engagement on his visit to Cape Town was to meet with 120 young environmentalists yesterday. This was as part of the inaugural Earthshot Prize Climate Leaders Youth Programme.

The Earthshot Prize

With an increasing emphasis on the importance of protecting the environment, The Royal Foundation and Prince William launched The Earthshot Prize. It is a project that Prince William is very passionate about. The fourth award ceremony of this prize is taking place in Cape Town on Wednesday, 6 November.

This is another first for Cape Town and also for South Africa.

The initiative aims to raise awareness surrounding environmental issues, and more importantly, to bring about change.

What else is on William’s itinerary?

Prince William will have four days of engagements in Cape Town. While The Earthshot awards ceremony is the main reason for his trip to South Africa, he has quite a few other things planned. He will also attend a global wildlife summit, visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on the slopes of Cape Town’s landmark Table Mountain, spend time at a sea rescue base, and also meet with a local fishing community.

He will use the visit to highlight other issues close to his heart, such as the work of rangers on the front line of conservation efforts, officials stated.
