The top thought on most South Africans’ minds seems to be that new ANC leader Cyril Ramaphosa must recall Jacob Zuma as President of South Africa. Calls for a recall have come from opposition leaders through to the general public sharing jokes on social media (most of the same image of Ramaphosa and Zuma, with slightly different words).
DA Leader Mmusi Maimane: “I hope that the new ANC President’s first act will be to recall Jacob Zuma as President of South Africa, prosecute him for his corruption charges, and jail him if he is found guilty.”
Freedom Front Plus leader Dr Pieter Groenewald: “If Ramaphosa does not recall Zuma, his hands will essentially be tied behind his back and Zuma will have one court case after another so as to keep plundering state assets and ensure that all the rotten-apple ministers are retained.”
UDM President Bantu Holomisa: “If [Ramaphosa] fails to recall JZ and other State Capture culprits then we must throw him in the dustbin.”
But EFF Leader Julius Malema cautions: “The Guptas are still in charge and as a result it will be difficult to recall Zuma.”
Former Editor of the Financial Mail Barney Mthombothi argues: “Ramaphosa must impose his authority on the party immediately. One way of doing it is recall Zuma asap.”
Maimane congratulated Ramaphosa in a message on facebook Tuesday morning, and said “you have a tough job on your hands”, reiterating “I remain committed to working with any political party that will govern for the people of South Africa. We must ensure that money meant for the people is spent on the people, and that those found guilty of corruption are put behind bars.”
