Poll findings: 85% desire Brink’s return as Tshwane mayor – but it’s unlikely to occur
Nasiphi Moya, who formerly acted as Cilliers Brink’s deputy, is likely to be the new mayor of Tshwane.
ActionSA’s Dr. Nasiphi Moya is expected to be appointed as the new mayor of Tshwane, as the ANC, Economic Freedom Fighters, and other parties in the council have agreed to support her.
Moya has been acting as mayor since the Democratic Alliance’s Cilliers Brink was ousted via a no-confidence motion in late September. She was deputy mayor under Brink.
ANC and EFF together have 98 seats out of the Tshwane council’s total of 214, but with the ActionSA’s 19 seats, Moya is a shoo-in to become the city’s sixth mayor since 2016.

X voters are getting Moya as mayor
On Tuesday, The South African ran a poll on X (formerly Twitter), asking social media users to pick who they would like to run South Africa’s administrative capital.
The results are overwhelming – 85.2% picked Brink as their preferred mayor. In second place was Moya with 11.9%, with the ANC’s Kgosi Maepa coming in third with 1.7%. The EFF Tshwane leader, Obakeng Ramabodu, garnered a paltry 1.2% of the X votes.
Lesufi to Zille over Tshwane mayorship: We won’t be bullied!
Moya’s election as mayor is like to rock the government of national unity boat, after DA chief Helen Zille said there would be consequences for the ANC if Brink was not returned as mayor of Tshwane.
On Monday, Zille said there would not be a pact with the ANC to stabilise metro municipalities across the country including Nelson Mandela Bay. Some of the discussions included the ANC keeping Ekurhuleni, while the DA continues to lead Tshwane.
However, on Wednesday morning – before the council sat to elect a new mayor – ANC Gauteng chairperson Panyaza Lesufi said Zille’s threatening attitude had led to their decision to back Moya over returning Brink.
Speaking after Lesufi, ActionSA founder and leader Herman Mashaba reiterated the ANC Gauteng’s chair’s sentiments, saying they had incurred a lot of abuse from Zille.
However, Mashaba said Moya was best course of action for Tshwane. He also stressed that working with the ANC and EFF was a far more palatable deal than working with the DA, the party that propelled him to the mayorship of the City of Johannesburg between August 2016 and November 2019.
